Dear Web Developer, We are so very sorry about IE6.
March 8, 2011, 12:14 PM
As most web developers will tell you, Internet Explorer 6 can be a real pain to work with (and later versions of Internet Explorer have problems of their own). That's why I particularly enjoyed this image [From Twitpic): Share photos on twitter with Twitpic Let's hope that "IE9 is way better" line proves to be true. Then again, with IE6 as your comparison point, I can't see it being worse. Sources: 1. Twitpic [kclawes]

Wait! Don't go!: A Full Bladder Could Make You A Better Decision Maker
March 5, 2011, 4:13 PM
gotta go icons
A recent study by psychologists from the University of Twente in the Netherlands suggests that a having a full bladder may affect your ability to make decisions...in a good way! The study posits that when your brain exerts control over your bladder, it exerts control over other desires as well. From The Telegraph:
Dr Mirjam Tuk, who led the study, said that the brain’s “control signals” were not task specific but result in an "unintentional increase" in control over other tasks. "People are more able to control their impulses for short term pleasures and choose more often an option which is more beneficial in the long run,” she said.
I wonder if it works the other way around... Wait! I don't have to wonder. I can simply use the Law of the Contrapositive! (High school math, don't fail me now!) If "people who can hold it are better decision makers" then, using logic (which is infallible), "people who are worse decision makers can't hold it." And I guess that means that people who are better decision makers can hold it better than people who are worse decision makers. Well look at that! We've learned something new! Keep that in mind the next time you and your friends are figuring out who's carpooling with whom. Sources: 1. People with full bladders 'make better decisions', scientists discover [The Telegraph] 2. Did Somebody Say "New iPad?" iPad 2 Release!
March 2, 2011, 2:15 PM
Yes, somebody did say "New iPad." I said that. See? In the title of this post. Right above here. Yeah, that was me. In case you didn't know, I love everything Apple. So it's not surprising that I'm excited about the release of the new iPad 2. The original iPad made a huge splash in 2010, making over $9.5 Billion in revenue for Apple. Almost 15 million units were sold in the first 9 months! Apple wasn't the only winner though. App Store developers made over $2 Billion in sales too! So...how does the iPad 2 compare to its predecessor? From Engadget (photo taken at Apple's "Come See What 2011 Will Be The Year Of" event): ipad 2 stats In addition to the aforementioned hardware improvements, the iPad 2 now comes with both front and rear-facing cameras, and an internal gyroscope! It's 33% thinner than the original iPad, weighs in at 1.3 pounds (.2 pounds lighter than the previous version) and surprisingly, it's also .5 mm thinner than the iPhone 4. Even with all of these speed and functionality improvements, it still maintains the same 10 hours of battery life. The iPad 2 works with both AT&T and Verizon, and will begin shipping on March 25th! Available in tons of colors, ranging from black to white to...well, that's it! Other updates include iOS 4.3, FaceTime for the iPad, iPad covers and several new iPad apps (iMovie, Garageband, PhotoBooth). Check out the sources below for additional details. Sources: 1. Mayo Mayo Everywhere, But Not A Drop To...AHH! HIT THE BRAKES!
March 1, 2011, 8:54 PM
tub of mayonnaise
Mayo's great on a sandwich...but not quite as good on a highway. Doesn't spread evenly. This past Saturday, a mayonnaise-related incident led to the partial closing of Interstate 44, right outside of Springfield, Missouri. The good news is, no injuries were reported. From The Pitch:
The Kansas City Star reports that a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 44 outside Springfield, Missouri, on Saturday left the highway coated in 40,000 pounds of mayo. Nobody was hurt in the crash that saw Springfield police close the eastbound lanes of the interstate for several hours to allow the mayo slick to be cleaned up.
I respect a tractor-trailer that can hold its mayo. Unfortunately, this one couldn't... Tractor-Trailer 1: "Look at how much mayo I can transport, you guys!" Tractor-Trailer 2: "Whoa, whoa, dude...it's not a contest. Just take it easy. Don't overdo it." TT1: "Psshhh...I've done this before! I know how much mayo I can take! And whadda you know anyway?! You're pretty much a Tonka truck! Hah!" TT2: "I think you've had enough..." TT1: "Listen, Tonka...I'll tell you when I've had en-UUGGHH!" [Insert whatever sound flying/splattering mayonnaise makes...here.] We all knew that wouldn't end well. Here's a video from NBC Action News:
And remember! You can't spell "Bacon Scent Win" without "NBC Action News." (Just wanted to let you know.) Sources: 1. 40,000 pounds of spilled mayo shut down I-44 on Saturday [The Pitch] 2. Mayonnaise Photo [Photo Monkey]

Use Your Brain!: Driving With Your Mind
March 1, 2011, 2:11 PM
Between yesterday and today, we've got a car theme going! (Can you really call it a theme if it's only two distinct things? Probably not!) Today...we're looking at a new way to drive....with your mind! From Wired:
BrainDriver uses off-the-shelf parts, including an electroencephalography system designed for gaming, to control an autonomous Volkswagen Passat. The car isn’t very fast, and it responds to only rudimentary commands, but it brings us one step closer to the day we’re simply passengers along for the ride in vehicles that drive themselves. “The whole thing was not done as a real application for today, but as a ‘technology push,’ as a proof of concept of what technology can already achieve,” says Raul Rojas, a professor of artificial intelligence at the Free University of Berlin. “An intriguing question is how to ‘hybridize’ human and machine, and it was fun to try this with our car.”
For more, check out this video from Freie Universität Berlin: I wonder how much stress this kind of thing could put on your brain in the long term, compared to regular driving. Could it be more work? Less work? Could traveling in this manner... drive you crazy?! (Sorry, couldn't resist.) In related (though slightly old) news, if you haven't seen the Google car that drives itself, you should check out this article from the New York Times. Pretty impressive stuff. Sources: 1. VROOM VROOM! Huh? What? Say that again? Your car is too quiet!
February 28, 2011, 2:19 PM
2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
I don't know about you, but when I'm driving down a residential street at 90MPH, nothing sounds better to me than the intensely loud revving of my engine (because at times like that, I can't hear anything else). It's sort of a declaration of my manliness, you know? More revving means more testosterone, which means improved muscle development, beard benefits and a decreased likelihood of osteoporosis later in life. (Hah! I just added some science to this article!) But if you have an electric car, what can you do? They're so quiet by comparison! And as much as I hate to think about anyone other than myself, that silence could put pedestrians in danger. For that very reason, government regulations delayed the late 2010 release of Hyundai's Sonata Hybrid, which offered a user-controlled "virtual engine sound" that could be turned on or off. The "off" option was the dealbreaker. Regulations mandated that the engine sound remain on at all times so that people could actually hear the thing when it was two seconds away from backing into them (or speeding right toward them). So...Hyundai had to make some changes, which pushed the car's release into 2011. This on-all-the-time fix is great news, as you no doubt realize (two words: beard benefits). I just hope that this "virtual engine sound" is loud enough. Right now, when pedestrians they hear me going down the street in my gas-guzzler (because they definitely don't have the time to turn around and see me), the all-too-familiar *vroom* of my engine causes them to instinctively dive off of the sidewalk and into the arms of the nearest garden gnome. Electric cars may be better for the environment and will give you pretty awesome gas mileage...but do they come bundled with manliness? I want the full package. Deafeningly loud electric cars in 2012! Who's with me?! Huh? What? Sources: 1. Canada's Brand New Rotisserie Chicken Channel
February 27, 2011, 1:15 PM
rotisserie chicken
Canada, after years of wanting and not getting, has finally received its just deserts*...or in this case, just chicken. Starting on February 28th, and continuing for the next few months, the Swiss Chalet company plans to provide the Canadian people with their own 24/7 rotisserie chicken channel. That's right, all rotisserie chicken all the time. What'll you see at breakfast time? Chicken. How about lunch time? Chicken. Dinner time? HAMBURGERS! What? You're telling me it's not hamburgers? But I'm so good at guessing games! From Strategy:
...Starting Feb. 28, there will be an entire channel dedicated to one dinner idea exclusively: rotisserie chicken. Swiss Chalet is debuting an all-chicken, all-the-time digital TV channel on Rogers cable. Like the classic burning Yule log before it, the Rotisserie Channel will feature a roasting chicken 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the next three months. As it cooks (on Rogers’ channel 208), a promo code will regularly appear, driving viewers to Swiss Chalet’s Facebook page to claim an offer.
While some might claim it's a marketing tactic, I know better. The Canadian people had a need - plain and simple - and that need is finally being met. This is justice. Chicken-flavored justice. Well...as long as your TV screen tastes like chicken. Now I need to find out what my own TV screen tastes like. MMM...glossy goodness! *Note: Please be sure to look at source #3 (below) if you think that I used the phrase "just deserts" incorrectly. Sources: 1. Swiss Chalet Roasts with Rogers [Strategy] 2. Kinect Plus Minecraft Makes Big Juggling Block People And Non-Juggling Cats
February 26, 2011, 7:16 PM
What happens when you combine Microsoft Kinect technology with Minecraft? You get MASSIVE JUGGLING BLOCK PEOPLE! minecraft kinect juggling person And TREMENDOUS BLOCK CATS! minecraft kinect cat But unfortunately...not juggling cats, which is something that I'd really like to see. Cats don't need to juggle to win my good graces though. They have a place right up there with Abraham Lincoln. (And that's saying something!)
